What is the Schengen visa?

One visa that lets you visit 29 European countries on a single trip.

The Schengen Area is a group of European countries that have removed border checks between each other. With a Schengen short-stay visa you enter through one country and can then travel on to the others by train, car or plane without showing your passport at each border.

It is named after Schengen, a village in Luxembourg where the agreement was signed in 1985. It is the visa most UK residents need for a holiday, a family visit or a business trip to Europe.

  • 90 of 180 days

    Stay up to 90 days

    You can spend up to 90 days in the Schengen Area within any 180-day period, counted across all the countries together.

  • One visa, many borders

    Apply once, through the country where you will spend the most nights. The visa is then valid across the whole area.

  • Who needs one

    It depends on your passport, not where you live. Most non-EU nationals living in the UK on a BRP, BRC, PR or ILR need one. British citizens do not for short stays.

Three kinds of entry

  • Double entryEnter twice, for example a side trip out of the area and back.

I live in the UK. Do I need a Schengen visa?

It depends on your passport, not on where you live. British citizens do not need a visa for short stays. Most other non-EU nationals living in the UK on a BRP, BRC, PR or ILR do, and apply from the UK.

How early should I apply?

You can apply up to six months before you travel. We suggest starting six to eight weeks ahead, and earlier for summer and Christmas, because appointment slots run out first.

Which country should I apply through?

The country where you will spend the most nights. If you split your time equally, apply through the country you enter first.

Can you guarantee my visa?

No, and nobody honestly can. The embassy or consulate makes every decision. What we do is give them a complete, consistent application that answers the questions they ask.

Do I have to attend in person?

For most visas, yes. You attend a visa application centre once to hand in your file and give fingerprints and a photo. We book that appointment and prepare everything you take with you.

My visa was refused before. Can I apply again?

Yes. A previous refusal does not block a new application. Tell us what the refusal letter said and we will address those points in the new file.
